Sculptra® Aesthetic is composed of tiny beads of a synthetic material called poly-l-lactic acid. Poly-l-lactic acid (PLLA) is biocompatible (does not harm the body), biodegradable (able to be broken down by the body) material that has been widely used for over 25 years in medicine in dissolvable stitches and other surgical products. Sculptra® Aesthetic works to replace lost collagen.
What is Collagen?
Collagen is a key structural component that keeps skin youthful looking and smooth. As you age, your body’s collagen production decreases, and you may begin to see wrinkles. Within the deep dermis, your skin’s structure is reinforced as the product helps to replace that lost collagen. This reinforced collagen structure provides a foundation that gradually restores the look of fullness of your shallow to deep facial wrinkles and folds that have been depleted over time. The result? Sculptra® Aesthetic is different because it gradually and subtly corrects these facial wrinkles. This can provide a refined, more youthful-looking appearance that can last up to two years.

About the Procedure
Sculptra® Aesthetic is administered in a series of treatment sessions. Each treatment takes around 30 minutes and involves injections of Sculptra® Aesthetic using a very fine needle directly into the lower layers of the skin. Dr. Farzad R. Nahai can apply a topical or local anesthetic to minimize discomfort if needed.
The number of necessary injections depends on many factors. On average, three injection sessions are needed over a period of a few months. The number of injection sessions and the number of injections per session vary from person to person. It is important to return for all treatment sessions as instructed in order to get the maximum effect from the gradual process of collagen replacement.
How Long Does Sculptra® Aesthetic Last?
Following an average of three treatment sessions over a few months, you can expect to see a more natural, younger-looking appearance that can last up to two years. Sculptra® Aesthetic will not correct the underlying cause of the facial fat loss but will help improve the appearance by increasing skin thickness in the treated area.
Aftercare and Recovery
Immediately following a treatment session with Sculptra® Aesthetic, redness, pain, bruising or all of these signs can happen in the treatment area. These signs usually go away in a few hours to a few days. Patients should also avoid excessive sunlight, and use an ice pack to help to reduce common swelling.
