Breast Reduction for Uncomfortably Large Breasts
Breast Reduction can make your life more comfortable. If you have lived with uncomfortably large breasts, you know what it is like to have shoulder and neck pain, difficulty exercising, and the embarrassment of dealing with unwelcome stares or comments. Having breasts that are too large for your frame affects so many parts of your life. Dr. Farzad R. Nahai, a board-certified plastic surgeon at The Center for Plastic Surgery at Metroderm, P.C. in Atlanta, GA, is committed to crafting a solution through breast reduction surgery that not only delivers the look you desire but lasts a lifetime. Studies show that breast reduction patients are the happiest of all patients who undergo plastic surgery procedures.
Are You a Candidate?
Breast reduction surgery is safe for adults of all ages. Generally, female patients who experience pain, discomfort, and soreness as a result of the excessive weight of their breasts or are overly self-conscious about the size of their breasts are ideal candidates for the procedure. These women may experience other symptoms:
- Inability to participate in exercise or physical activities
- Irritation under the breast
- Indentations in the shoulders caused by bra straps
About the Procedure
Once general anesthesia is administered, the procedure begins with an incision shaped like an anchor, which is made around the areola and down the underside of the breast. Dr. Nahai will remove excess glandular tissue, fat, skin, and the nipple to move the breasts into their new position. Skin is shaped around the areola to give the breasts a new, uplifted contour. Generally speaking, the more skin that is cut, the more it is possible to shape the breast. Once Dr. Nahai has reduced the breasts down to the desired size, the incisions are closed with fine sutures.
Dr. Nahai advises patients to limit their activities and movement for the first few days to prevent breaking the stitches and stretching the scars. Most patients can return to work after one to two weeks. They should avoid overhead lifting and strenuous movements for several weeks.
Aftercare and Recovery
Patients should allow the body to fully heal before returning to work or other daily activities. For most patients, this means resting for approximately two weeks, but you should pay attention to your body’s unique timing and healing abilities to determine when it’s best to return to work. You will be sore for two or three days, and you will need to wear a surgical bra for a few weeks. The stitches will be removed about two weeks after the surgery. The pain is greatest within the first 48-hours but improves each day. Dr. Nahai will prescribe pain medication as needed.
Every patient is unique; therefore, results of treatment may vary.
